Moving Truck Size Calculator

List your furniture and boxes. The calculator adds up the cubic feet, adds room for awkward shapes and names the smallest truck that fits.

Typical truck sizes

These are typical inside volumes for generic box trucks. The truck you rent may differ a little, so read its listed capacity.

20 ft1,015 cu ftTwo to three bedrooms
26 ft1,682 cu ftThree to five bedrooms

What the starting presets add up to

Pick a home size in the calculator to load a typical list. With the default 15 percent extra for gaps, the presets come out like this.

HomeSpace neededTruck
Studio283 cu ft10 ft
1 bedroom477 cu ft15 ft
2 bedrooms723 cu ft15 ft
3 bedrooms1,120 cu ft26 ft
4 bedrooms1,568 cu ft26 ft

If the answer is close to a limit, take the next size up. A truck that is 95 percent full is hard to load, and a second trip costs more than a bigger truck.

Loading tips

  • Heavy items first, against the front wall, and tall items on the sides.
  • Stand mattresses on their sides along a wall and fill the gaps with soft items.
  • Use every inch up to the roof, with light boxes on top.
  • Strap the load in sections so nothing shifts in a turn.

Questions

What size truck do I need for a 2 bedroom apartment?

A 15 ft or 20 ft truck, depending on furniture and boxes. Use the calculator with your own list: a nearly full 15 ft truck is a signal to go up a size.

Can I fit a 3 bedroom house in a 20 ft truck?

Sometimes, with light furniture and few boxes. Most three-bedroom homes need a 26 ft truck or two trips.

How much extra room should I allow?

The calculator starts at 15 percent for gaps between odd shapes. Raise it if you have many large awkward items.

Does this use a particular rental company’s trucks?

No. The sizes are generic: 10, 15, 20 and 26 feet, with typical inside volumes.

Is it free?

Yes. Every calculator works on screen without an account, and the share link and a basic printout are free. The Move Planner ($4.99, one time) adds the full budget workbook, packing checklist, named tip envelopes and a room-by-room inventory.

Does it store what I type?

No. The numbers stay in your browser. The site records anonymous usage events, such as which calculator was used, but not your hours, bill, addresses or names.
