How Much to Tip Movers

Plan on $4 to $5 per mover per hour for a local move, or 5% to 10% of the bill for a long-distance move, split among the crew. That is common guidance, not a rule.

Typical amounts by situation

These examples use the default guidance with the calculator above. Change the numbers there to match your own job.

JobPer moverWhole crew
2 movers, 3 hours$12 to $15$24 to $30
3 movers, 4 hours$16 to $20$48 to $60
3 movers, 6 hours$24 to $30$72 to $90
4 movers, 8 hours, 2 flights of stairs$36 to $48$144 to $192
4 movers, 8 hours, piano, snow$52 to $75$208 to $300

A quick cross-check: movers on a half day are often tipped $20 to $40 each, and on a full day $40 to $80 each. If your hourly figure lands outside those bands, check the hours you entered.

Hourly moves and flat-rate moves

When the company bills by the hour, tip by the hour too: the longer the crew carried, the more they earned in effort. When the company gives a flat price, count the actual hours on site and use the same hourly figure. A flat quote for a six-hour job still means six hours of lifting.

On a long-distance move the bill is often by weight or a binding quote, so hours are unclear. That is why the percentage method exists. It is covered in tipping movers on a long-distance move.

Add for hard jobs

Some jobs are harder than the clock shows. The calculator adds a few dollars per mover for each flight of stairs, a long carry from the truck, a piano, safe or gun safe, and for heat, rain or snow. A hot tub is a note instead of a number, because it usually needs a specialist crew whose rate varies. Elevator buildings add nothing, but a slow shared elevator is worth a thank-you.

Cash, envelopes and who gets what

Cash is the norm. Hand a separate envelope to each person at the end, so the lead does not have to divide it and nobody is left out. If there is a driver who also loads, he or she is part of the crew count. If a few people only helped for an hour, tip them by the hours they worked.

If something went wrong

A tip is a reward, not a bill. If a crew was late without a call, rushed, damaged furniture or ignored your instructions, tip less or nothing. Photograph any damage, note it on the paperwork before the crew leaves, and contact the company the same day.

Questions

How much do you tip movers for a half day?

Often $20 to $40 per mover for a half day of up to four hours, and $40 to $80 for a full day. The hourly method gives a similar answer.

Do you have to tip movers?

No. Tipping movers is optional and customary in the US. If the company already adds a gratuity or service fee, ask what it covers before you add cash.

Should I tip the driver more than the loaders?

Not automatically. Everyone who worked on your move gets the same hourly base. Add a little more for anyone who clearly went beyond, such as careful wrapping of fragile pieces or a hard carry.

Can I tip by card or app?

Some companies take tips on the invoice or through an app, but cash handed to each person is simplest and goes straight to the crew. Ask the company if you prefer to tip digitally.

What if the movers were late or broke something?

Tip less or nothing and report the problem. Take photos, write it on the paperwork before the crew leaves and contact the company the same day.

Are these amounts a rule?

No. They are common guidance. Tipping is optional, and every rate in the calculator can be changed to match what you think is fair.
